TEACHER TO REVISE DESCRIPTION 7/27/10

In this class you will learn basic Chinese brush techniques with ink and colors, and the theories and philosophies behind this age-old art form. The traditional topics explored will be the ‘Four Gentlemen’: plum, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo as well as birds and insects. You will also be given the opportunity to experiment painting American flora and fauna with Chinese brush techniques. Dr. Son Mey Chiu is a professional Chinese painter and a teacher at Mass College of Art, Decordova Museum, and other New England institutions.IES NEEDED FOR CLASS:Brushes:
Large: Sumi Brush #10 or #12
Medium: Sumi Brush #8
Small:  Sable Bamboo #4
 
Ink:
One Ink well and One ink stick
If the above are unavailable: 1 bottle ink and a small dish
 
Colors:  (Western equivalences)
Cotman (student grade, less expensive) or Windsor & Newton (artist grade, more expensive)
 
Small tubes:  Cadmium Red deep or Alizarin Crimson, New Gamboge or Genuine Gamboge, Indigo, Vermilion, Chinese White, Burnt Sienna, Cobalt Blue, Veridian.
 
Paper:
Rice paper in rolls or sheets (thickness:  medium)
 
Palette:
Any palettes for water color paintings
 
Water Containers:
3 medium containers, for example: used plastic containers for liquid, yogurt or soup. 
 
Felt
One piece of felt about 3’x3’ to protect the painting tables, obtainable at Joanne’s Fabrics (the inexpensive kind will do.)  Or use newspapers or newsprints to protect the tables.
